Safety Tip of the Week

|
Every year we rescue dozens of nice dogs like these with special medical or treatment needs. They all have treatable illnesses that can be fixed with a little more time, money and TLC. However these expenses are not funded with public monies, so Friends of the Shelter contributes thousands of dollars each month for their care.
You can help by sponsoring one of these dogs to give it the chance for health and happiness that every dog deserves. Please donate to Friends of the Shelter! Your donations to FOTS are tax-deductible.
All of these new dogs need sponsors
to help pay for their care & treatment

Gracie Lou
ADOPTED!!!

Gracie came to the shelter just before the new year with a freshly fractured foot, most likely the result of being stepped on when she got her little foot under someone's big foot! Thanks to the generosity of our Friends of the Shelter donors, Gracie was able to be moved offsite so her foot fractures could be realigned and a splint applied as quickly as possible and she now is nearly complete in her recuperation thanks to a dedicated foster home where she was shown the tough love of cage rest so that she could heal as quickly as possible. Her bones have now healed and her leg is getting stronger. Gracie loves her new freedom and enjoys playing in the snow, chasing and retrieving her toys so that she can crash in her persons lap for a few minutes before being ready to retrieve again. Gracie is your typical teething puppy so plenty of chew toys and a gentle teacher for when she forgets what her teeth are chewing is a must.

Reuben
ADOPTED!!

Although he can be shy with new people, it doesn't take long before Reuban is your best buddy! Reuban is a happy-go-lucky, eager to please, very food motivated, social butterfly with every dog he meets. He has lots of energy and would love to have a runner in the family to accompany on a daily tour of the city (or country). He loves to go for rides in the car too, especially if the destination is the dog park. Reu walks very nicely wearing his gentle leader and is a quick learner for new tricks when rewarded with a tasty treat! CT and HB.

Mia
ADOPTED!!

Mia came to us when her owner could not longer care for her. Unfortunately, shortly after arriving at the shelter, she became very sick with a high fever, swollen joints, and pain in her legs so great that she could not stand anymore. We aren't sure what led to her condition (but are suspicious that it may be an adverse reaction to her rapid growth, to a virus she came into contact with recently, or even her vaccinations). Under usual circumstances, Mia's journey to find a new home would not have ended happily, but thanks to the generous donors who support our offsite infirmary care program, Mia has been moved to a veterinary hospital where she is currently being treated for her condition. Its mid August and a few days after starting some aggressive therapy and Mia is already looking brighter and is much more comfortable. Check back in mid September for an update on Mia and her progress ... and don't forget that this little girl is waiting for her happy ending!

Amos
ADOPTED!!

Amos is one of the sweetest boys you will ever meet but he is super shy and needs some help socializing and adjusting in new environments.
Amos has had a rough start and due to a heavy intestinal parasite burden, it has taken him some extra time to be deemed adoptable, but thanks to the generous donors to Friends of the Shelter, Amos is getting the extra time and treatment he needs.
Amos is very submissive with other dogs but does enjoy their company and looks to them to follow. He needs a home with another dog and is also very good with cats. Amos is very laid back and loves the comfort of thick dog beds and playing with toys. He is a great car rider too. With some more socialization, Amos has great potential for therapy dog work. No kids under 8 years. Established vet reference required. Amos is in foster care, email Erin ...

Natty
ADOPTED
Natty Moo is a happy-go-lucky, playful, affectionate girl! Natty came to the shelter a skinny, matted, very shy little gal, but after just a short time in foster care, she is gaining weight, her bad hair cut is starting to grow out so that hopefully she can soon get a cute hair cut that shows her adorable outward appearance to match her fabulous personality, and she is learning to warm up to strangers with less hesitation and time. Natty loves to play with other dogs or cats, snuggle with people, and 'talk' to anyone who will listen and talk back. She is crate trained, housebroken, and always eager to please. Natty will need regular grooming and continued socialization. No kids under ten. Vet reference required.

Jake
RESCUED

Jake certainly has earned the chance to find a happy ending! Jake was adopted out from here as a two month old pup but was never taken to the vet for his wellness visits or puppy shots to keep him healthy, never taken to puppy classes to teach him basic manners, never given flea preventative to keep him bug free, and never kept in a stable environment for long enough to learn a routine.
And so, four months after being adopted, Jake found his way back to the shelter compliments of his latest failed family, very sick with the parvo virus, infested with fleas, and full of intestinal parasites. Jake's luck began to change the day he came back to the shelter though, thanks to the generous donors to Friends of the Shelter, who supported his transfer offsite where he was treated for the parvo virus, fleas, and intestinal parasites that almost took his life.
Jake now knows the 'good' in people and becomes quickly attached to anyone who shows him kindness and attention. He does best with routine and security. He is eager to please and loves to play with other dogs. Jake is crate trained (a part of his security) & nearly housebroken too. Vet reference required. Another canine companion would be ideal.

Joy
ADOPTED!!

Joy's name says it all ... She is always happy, she makes people happy with her gentle, endearing personality, and other four legged creatures love her too because she is always appropriate and soft in her play. Joy has had her share of rough times and came to the shelter with a dislocated hip that had been that way for an extended period of time .. But as dogs do, Joy had taken her injury instride and adjusted her lifestyle to three legs, although the fourth left her in dull pain on a continual basis. Joy was one of the lucky ones of 2010 though as Friends of the Shelter was able to fund the surgery to have her dislocated hip fixed and as we head into 2011 she is adjusting back to life as a functional four legged girl and living without pain for the first time in awhile. Joy is crate trained, housebroken, loves to snuggle with her person, and is a great passenger in the car. Vet reference required.

Grady
ADOPTED!!

Grady is a total package deal! He is quite a charmer, loves to snuggle with his person, enjoys the company of other dogs although is pretty smart about taking cover when the big dogs start to play rough, is a total pushover with cats, and hasn't met a person he didn't like. Grady came to us as an unclaimed stray with a painful rear leg lameness. Xrays of his hips revealed some old pelvis fractures that had not healed properly and were causing him pain in the ball and socket joint of his hip. Lucky for Grady, Friends of the Shelter was around to save his day (and life), providing him with the surgery he needed to fix his leg so he is no longer in pain and he will lead a normal, happy life. Grady has been a champ during his recovery, patiently watching the Christmas season from the inside of a cage while his body healed, but the New Year is coming soon and as of 2011, this boy will be ready for a new home and no restrictions ... A belated Christmas gift to himself and whoever the lucky family is who gets to take him home. Vet reference required.

Keeper
ADOPTED!!

Can you say adorable? This pup is definitely a 'Keeper.' And we aren't just talking about his looks ... you should see his personality! Keeper came to us hobbling around on only three legs, with a big bruised swollen lower rear leg thanks to a car accident that he did not come out on the 'winning' side of. He was fortunate enough to have xrays taken of his leg within a short time of being brought to the dog shelter and based on such quick timing, we were able to stabilize his broken bones with just a splint and his leg began to heal in nearly perfect alignment almost immediately. So, while 'luck' was not on his side when he was hit by a car, his luck certainly changed when he got to the dog shelter thanks to our generous donors to Friends of the Shelter who believe in giving our broken bones and spirits a second chance. Keeper's leg healed quickly (puppies are so resilient) and he is now splint free and getting the hang of romping and playing on all four legs again ... which he loves to do, especially when the romping involves diving into a fresh pile of leaves. Keeper has a super sweet, submissive personality, has yet to meet anyone or anything he didn't love, and is all about pleasing his people. He will do best in a home with another canine companion and a family ready to continue his socialization and learning as he grows up to be a great dog! CT and nearly HB>

Penny
ADOPTED!!!
Penny is practically perfect in every way, well except for one "slightly" crooked left front leg BUT that is a major improvement from the 90 degree angle it had healed at in the months before she arrived at the shelter. The pain in which this little gal has endured to get to this adoptions page today is beyond what many of us could imagine but she hasn't let it taint her spirit and she greets all people and animals with a smile and wagging tail. Penny is full of spunk and can't wait for the day when she can run and play. She is a petite gal ... More hair than body! She is crate trained and housebroken too. Vet reference, toy breed experience, and no kids under 12. Penny will be available after Thanksgiving.

Linus
ADOPTED!!!

Little Linus had a rough start...because of a birth defect in his liver called an extrahepatic portosystemic shunt (a blood vessel 'plumbing' problem in the liver) but thanks to our dedicated foster home program, the generous donors of Friends of the Shelter, and a very talented surgeon, he is fighting his way back and will be a healthy happy hunk of a guy soon. Linus has a super sweet personality and although he still has his rotten puppy streaks surface from time to time, he really is well on his way to being a model canine citizen. Linus enjoys playing with toys, snuggling for naps, and of course, chewing! Linus is crate trained and almost housebroken too ... he has the idea and has a voice to tell you when he needs to go, so its just up to you to listen to him and move quickly! Linus had surgery on his liver on Thursday September 2, 2010 and it was a success. He now has three months of R & R, special medicine, and a special low protein diet to finish his recovery and then, pending no surprises, he will be ready to live a happy, healthy 'normal' life (pretty amazing considering his start).Vet reference required.

Bronson

Bronson is a big goof ... And he has nothing but appreciation for all of those generous donors to Friends of the Shelter who gave him the opportunity to be here. You see, Bronson came to the shelter with an old fracture to his femur (thigh bone) that had not healed properly and left him with an almost nonfunctional leg. After some pretty intensive surgery by a very talented surgeon and a lot of hardware, Bronson now has a functioning leg ... Its not just there for show anymore ... And he can't wait to have a good run on all four feet! Bronson is very social ... He hasn't met a canine, feline, or human he didn't love. He is CT and appears to be housebroken too. Bronson will be available for adoption after Nov 1st and in the meantime, will be doing his best to heal quickly and will pass the time with peanut butter kongs and busy buddy bones stocked with gnawhide rings. Lenny
ADOPTED!!!

Lenny is another one of those adorable faces that has an awesome personality to go with his good looks! Lenny came to us with a broken leg that needed repair and thanks to Friends of the Shelter, he was able to move into foster care while he recovered from a heavy case of kennel cough and then was given the opportunity to have his leg fixed by a very talented surgeon. In the time Lenny waited for surgery, his leg had already healed significantly and so his fracture repair was more involved than that of a fresh fracture ... but that didn't stop Friends of the Shelter supporters nor the surgeon determined to give him back use of his leg. Lenny will never know how lucky he is to be here today and to no longer be in chronic pain, but we do ... and once he has healed, we will certainly find him a home who understands how lucky he is and promises to make sure he is safe and healthy for the rest of his days. Lenny is CT and will resume his work on HB following his four weeks of cage rest while his leg heals. Check back mid December for an update on Lenny's progress ... he is hoping to have a stocking hung at his new address by the time the Christmas holidays roll around! Dexy
ADOPTED!!!
Look at the personality in those ears!! She is adorable now but she wasn't quite so cute when she came to our shelter. Even with bright red, itchy, smelly skin and only patchy hair on most of her body though, no one could negate little Dexy had the cutest face and the personality to go with it. Dexy came to us covered in demodectic mange and a secondary skin infection as a result of the mange, but thanks to the support of our donors and our offsite infirmary care program, Dexy received the treatment she needed for this non contagious skin mite and is eagerly awaiting her chance to meet new people. Dexy is crate trained and housebroken, and she is working on walking on a leash and basic manners. She is now in great shape, has a fully body of soft hair, and is ready for a permanent address of her own. Dexy is a tom boy at heart, so don't think for a minute that she can't keep up with the big dogs and big kids ... She is perfect material for an active household.

Pnewman
ADOPTED!!
We don't know what led to Pnewman being so sick or how long he had been struggling to breath from the pneumonia that was overtaking his lungs before he made his way to the shelter, but let's just say Pnewman was one of the very lucky ones that was fast-tracked through the shelter to our offsite infirmary care program for intensive care. For the last week, Pnewman has spent his days in a "fog" of warm medicated air to help break up the "crud" in his lungs. He's gone from gasping for breath to honking like a goose to now just an occasional productive cough, and with each stage of improvement this little guy has become more loving and attentive and playful. It will probably be early September before he is ready to visit with people interested in adoption, so check back once the kids are back in school to see how he is doing!

Fergus
ADOPTED!!
Even a broken leg and a snow storm could not keep this darling little guy down ... in fact, if anyone could turn misfortune into opportunity, it is Fergus. By the time he found help, only his little tail was still a thumping, but it showed he was a fighter and so, on his behalf, we campaigned for his his leg and therefore his future. And just like Brixton, Fergus' accident timing worked to his advantage as those generous donors to Friends of the Shelter chose him as a poster child for their campaign to carry on. Although very frustrated with his restrictions of cage rest as the sun starts to shine again, Fergus is willing to negotiate continued cage rest as long as he is kept busy with a regularly restocked busy buddy bristle bone. Ferg is crate trained, working on housebreaking, eager to please, and ready for someone to fall in love with him. Vet reference required.

Blake
ADOPTED!

Even with a dislocated hip and a left rear leg fracture that has not healed like it should have, this amazing pup is still happy, loving, and wanting to please his humans. He even wants to run and play with his big canine brothers and sisters ... those puppies never want to miss a thing! Can you even imagine what he has been through to get to this point? Lucky for Blake, the generous supporters of special needs dogs like Blake have given us the go ahead to fix this little guy and give him a life that he would not otherwise have had the opportunity to have. Blake will be undergoing two procedures during the middle of August to begin his healing process - first he will be having a femoral head excision to fix his dislocated hip and then he will be having a corrective osteotomy to straighten out his broken bone and allow it to continue growing with the rest of his body during the next six months so he doesn't end up with one leg drastically shorter than another. During his recovery period, Blake will continue working on his crate training, housebreaking, and will try out every interactive toy we can come up with to ease the boredom that goes with cage rest. Check back in mid September for updates on this little man ...

Meet Pockette ... Small, cute, full of life ... And ready to be part of yours!! Pockette came to us as an owner surrender because her owners were no longer able to care for her. Well, lucky for Pockette, Friends of the Shelter was able to step in and pick up where Pockette's owner had left off with her skin infection. Pockette has been in foster care for over a month now and her skin looks great and she is ready to find a family to entertain and be entertained by. Pockette loves to run and play and is quite agile too! She loves other dogs and people of all ages ... Anyone who will pay attention to her will quickly become her best friend. Pockette is still working on crate training and housebreakin, and rightfully so considering her situation when she was surrendered, but she is a smart little squirt and should come up to speed pretty quick with some one on one training and attention. Pibbles
ADOPTED!!!
Well, he's back ... and better than ever! Pibbles (fka Mr. Pibb) is making his last appearance to this webpage, we hope, and this time, he is as healthy as he can be! Pibb came to the shelter several months ago with a chronic vomiting/regurgitation problem, a problem we discovered was caused by a birth defect known as a persistent right aortic arch (In the fetus there are blood vessels that at first may serve a function, but then naturally deteriorate as the embryo grows. Occasionally, vessels in the chest cavity, called the aortic arches, will fail to disappear. The right aortic arch passes near the esophagus. If this blood vessel persists in the newborn, the esophagus is trapped between it and the heart. This inhibits the growth and function of the esophagus, thus restricting food passage to the stomach. Usually, symptoms appear before six months of age and include stunted growth and regurgitation immediately after eating.) Thanks to a dedicated foster home, generous donors to Friends of the Shelter, and a very talented surgeon, Pibbles received the surgery he needed to release the 'trapped esophagus' and allow for easier passage of food, although due to the chronicity of his condition, some permanent changes had already occurred. Pibbles is now over six weeks post op and is doing amazingly well, so well that he no longer has to be hand fed, nor does he have to be on a prescription diet or oral meds, although he does still need to be fed a watered down canned food diet and can only take individual kibble or treats by hand to ensure that a food ball does not get lodged in the esophagus 'pocket' that remains. Pibbles is a very social and affectionate guy. He is crate trained, housebroken, and loves to be with you. His favorite place in his foster home is to be perched on the back of the couch like a cat so he can see everything going on ... he doesn't miss a thing! No cats - he loves to chase them but other dogs and people are welcome! Vet reference required.

Big ears, big heart, big success story, thanks to the generosity of Friends of the Shelter and the medical attention she received as a result of it. Daisy was found near an abandoned house after being hit by a car. Unable to even lift her head nor maintain her body temperature when found and for hours thereafter, Daisy is very lucky to be here and looking for a place to call her own. She has completely recovered from her injuries in the safety and security of a foster home, and continues to recover from months and months of neglect that left her with a severe ear infection. Daisy is a triumphant girl though and 110% devoted to her caretaker, so we are optimistic that she is on her way to being a healthy girl again. Daisy enjoys the company of other dogs and cats but would be perfectly content to be your one and only. She is CT, HB, a great traveler and an awesome snuggler. Established vet reference required.

Can you say adorable? This girl is one power packed package and just as sweet as can be ... And she has been through a war to get to be on this page. Sadie-girl came to us pretty underweight but still full of life, but that was short lived as Sadie came down with the parvo virus and it took its toll on her. Two weeks of intense treatment though and Sadie bounced back, but that wasn't the end of her plight to live as shortly thereafter, Sadie's joints collapsed as a result of her malnutrition and once again, Sadie's future was in question. Sadie is a fighter though and once again, she has bounced back and is doing amazingly well (as you can see from her picture). Winnie is all Jack Russell ... and proud of it! This little spitfire loves your attention, loves to explore, and loves to play with toys. Winnie came to us with a fractured pelvis, but lucky for her and thanks to our shelter dogs' support by Friends of the shelter, she was able to be evaluated by an orthopedic surgeron and no surgery was needed as her healing was amenable to cage rest. Although Winnie will probably always have a 'hitch in her giddy up' (she will probably always have an intermittent left rear leg lameness), she should not be in pain and should have a good, functional quality of life which will allow her to bounce and chase as she sees fit (she is quite the hunter ... and cats and bunnies are at the top of her list!) She may be small and she may only have three legs but that little Nicki is a big dog at heart and she can still keep up with the best of them! Nic came to us with a broken leg that had been that way for some time so despite our most valiant efforts to save her leg, the surgeon was unable to work with such old and remodeled pieces and so we had no choice but to remove her leg to save her from a lifetime of constant pain. Melaney
Adopted!!

Melaney is a fun, eager to please, social girl. She and her pups (Alice, Laney, and Parker) ended up at the dog shelter as 'strays', although we have all our doubts about that. Shortly after arriving at the dog shelter, Melaney and her pups got sick with the parvo virus, but thanks to the support of our Friends of the Shelter, Melaney and her pups were all saved and are now looking for homes. Melaney is awesome with other dogs, but a little overzealous with her feline friends, so we recommend a feline free house. She is good on a leash, especially with her gentle leader and a good passenger in the car. CT & HB.

Mo
Adopted!!

Lil Mo is as sweet, funny, and happy as they come ... but he hasn't always been that way. Mo came to the shelter with a broken leg, the unfortunate consequence of being a little dog in a home with little children (talk about a health hazard!) In most dog shelters, a broken leg would have been the end of the road for lil Mo, but that was not the case here as the generous donors of Friends of the Shelter believe in second chances. Mo is now on the mend and is patiently awaiting being released from cage rest and able to play with people and pups. Mo is looking for a home with lots of patience as he has no clue about housebreaking and his crate training is a work in progress. He would also like a home with no kids under 10 and another pup of similar size would be great too. Established canine vet reference required.

Grayton
Adopted!

Meet little Gray ... Undeniably cute, absolutely personable and loveable and eager to learn, please, and be a part of it all. Grayton came to the shelter with a badly broken left rear foot, so badly broken that the bones had to be pinned back together. Thanks to the support of Friends of the Shelter, little Gray was able to get the surgery he needed to fix his foot so it would heal correctly and he is well on his way to making a complete recovery. Gray is a people dog - he loves to just be with you, although he thoroughly enjoys romping and playing with canine or feline friends as well. He is also a big fan of toys and treats. Gray is an excellent traveler too. Gray would do best in a home with another canine companion and a family that enjoys being home or taking him along to family gatherings, sporting events, camping excursions, and such.

Keefer
ADOPTED!!

Keefer is all smiles now that August is here but June and July were particularly tough months for him as he struggled to overcome starvation (whomever had him prior to ending up at the shelter did not feed him), heavy flea and intestinal parasite infection, and then, to top it all off, parvo virus. With all that behind him now, Keef is now up over ten pounds in the last month and he plans on continuing in that direction. Despite it all, Keefer is just a gentle little love bug, yearning for someone to 'choose him, love him.' Good with other dogs, cats, and people of all ages. Crate trained and almost housebroken.

Deidre
ADOPTED

No history provided, no explanation given, no help offered no history, no explanation, and no other offers. She is a resilient little girl to save her by those abandoned her ... that's where little Deidre was fortunate enough to find new friends ... 'friends of the shelter' ... they stepped in to help despite and determined to beat the odds that have been stacked against her. Although not a fan of being confined to a cage and quite vocal about it from time to time, Little D is dealing with the cards she has been dealt and with the help of a dedicated foster home, will get through this cage rest period and be ready for the last snowfall of the season! Vet reference required.

Kaden
ADOPTED

Big head, big feet, big uncoordination, and a big appetite for life ... in whatever form he can experience it (and his big future includes his to-be big body!). Kaden came to us as an unclaimed stray and within a short time of arriving, became very sick with the often fatal intestinal virus, parvo virus. Lucky for Kaden, the technicians working at the shelter were quick to pick up on his sudden inappetance and with the help of Friends of the shelter, he was moved offsite for treatment of the virus and came through his illness with flying colors. Due to his three weeks on quarantine, he is a bit behind in his crate training and housebreaking, but with some due diligence, it shouldn't take long for him to get caught up. Kaden loves to play with other dogs, especially when they have just as much extra skin as he does for chewing and slobbering on.

Phoebe
ADOPTED!

Full of sass and spice, Little Phoebe doesn't let anyone stand in her way or tell her what to do. Don't get us wrong, Phoebe is as sweet and cuddly as they come, not to mention very gentle and tolerant of new people, places, things and situations, but she makes her presence known and definitely wants to be the center of your attention. Phoebe came to us with a dislocated hip and thanks to Friends of the shelter, she had the surgery she needed to give her a pain free and functional future ... so she is not only a happy package but a healthy one at that. Phoebs is crate trained, housebroken, a great passenger (preferring to help drive), and just a joy to be around. Vet reference required.

Magnolia
Adopted!!

You'd never know it now, but it was only two weeks ago that this little cutie was not all wiggles and smiles. Although a little disadvantaged exploring the world without her hearing, being deaf was nothing compared to the uphill battle she would climb in order to survive parvo, a potentially deadly intestinal virus that unvaccinated puppies and dogs get. But she is a survivor and look at her now ... full of personality, eager to play with anyone who can keep up with her, and learning handle signals to help her navigate in a hearing world. Magnolia and many others who battle this virus in order for a second or third chance at a happy ending are here because of the support and generosity of Friends of the Shelter, those who give opportunities to these pups who would not otherwise have such.

Chocolate
Adopted!!

Chocolate is finally on his way back to being himself, but he's been far from it for the last month. We don't know what kind of trauma occurred to make Chocolate's lower left front leg turn at a 90degree angle from the norm near his wrist, but it took a special surgeon, lots of patience, and a metal implant to straighten it back out ... and that was just the beginning of his road to recovery. Following his injury, Chocolate became hesitant of anyone coming near him, as if anticipating being hurt again, but as his leg heals in the safety of a gentle foster home, so does his spirit. Chocolate's recovery will continue for another four weeks with strict cage rest and physical therapy as his daily routine, but he looks forward to finding a new permanent address with a new family to love him, care for him, and protect him from getting hurt again. Choc is crate trained, houesbroken, good with other dogs and cats, and seeks to be near his person once he feels safe and secure with them. No kids under 12. Established vet referenc required.

Addi
Adopted!!
Thank you Dr. Snoke for saving my life :)

Weeks before coming into our care, Addi sustained an injury to her left front leg that left it badly wounded, most likely the result of being hit and drug by a car. We tried hard to save her leg, and the tissue healed well over a 10day period, but unfortunately, the nerve damage she sustained when the original injury occurred was too extensive and the choice had to be made of whether to save her life. And so, thanks to the generosity of a special surgeon, Addi's leg was removed and she is currently healing in a foster home until she is ready for adoption. Addi is resilient, as are most dogs, and she had adjusted nicely to life with only three legs. She gets along well, and never misses the opportunity to jump up and hug a person with her remaining front leg. Addi is crate trained (but does not need to be), housebroken, good with other dogs, indifferent to cats, and 100% lovebug. Addi is definitely a people-oriented dog, so being an only dog child would be fine with her as well.

Kennedy
Adopted!!

Kennedy may look a little tongue-tied but she is actually one lucky dog. She came to the shelter with a shattered jaw. We are not sure what happened, but we do know that thanks to the generosity of Dr. Prescott and the Dogs Only staff, Kennedy is once again able to eat, drink and ‘talk.’ A section of her jaw had to be removed due to the injury and so Kennedy will always require a special diet.
Aside from that, she is an active, vocal, playful little gal who endears herself to everyone she meets. She is crate trained and is great with other dogs. Her ideal home is one with no cats (she LOVES to chase them), children at least 12 years old older (she LOVES to get under foot), no apartments (she will tell why repeatedly and loudly if you seem to be listening) and she must have an owner with a current vet reference.
Kennedy is in foster care, please email Erin to meet her!

Booka
Adopted!!

Booka is one of those cases that you never forget, no matter how hard you may try. Booka was an owner surrender to the dog shelter as a four month old pup, her owners reportedly unable to care for her. At first glance, she appeared to have been burned, either chemically or by scalding grease or even by fire, but at closer look, Booka's skin condition was something much more severe, much harder to diagnose and even harder to treat. But thanks to the dedicated support of a widespread medical team, including emergency doctors, dermatologists, and wound care specialists, Booka's skin condition was diagnosed as a toxic epidermal necrosis, the result of a severe drug reaction to a Clavamox overdose, and a four month course of treatment was instituted to give this girl a chance at a 'normal' life, albeit minus some patches of hair and plus large areas of scar tissue. Booka has made a remarkable recovery and her spirit is amazing, and continues to be. She loves to play with other dogs, is amused by cats and their antics, and is 100% devoted to her people. Booka is crate trained and housebroken, loves to go for rides, and will be a constant companion to the person lucky enough to call her their own. Vet reference required.

Cyrus
Adopted!!
Cyrus is happy, perky, and getting around well now ... but just a few weeks ago, he could barely balance on his two good legs while trying to minimize pressure on his two bad legs. A traumatic injury left him with two broken bones in his front leg, complicated by dozens of deeply infected puncture wounds, as well as a similarly bitten rear leg. Cyrus is only about 1/3 of the way through his recovery, but each splint changes shows marked improvement in his soft tissue as well as bone stability, a healing opportunity he has only had thanks to the generous supporters of Friends of the Shelter. Cyrus is CT and working on HB. He appears to be good with other animals and loves people, although has become quite bouncy as he heals and feels better, so would probably do best in a home without kids under 8years.

Brixten
Adopted!!

She is alert and attentive now (March 10th) , but just a few short days ago (March 4th), little Brixton just lay, trembling all over and wincing with every move as her right rear leg throbbed with pain as a result of being hit by a car and sustaining a broken leg. Although she might not think so, her accident timing worked to her favor as Friends of the Shelter was able to step up and give her the surgery she needed to save her leg, and her life. Brixton is now recovering in a foster home capable of the 'tough love' needed to successfully complete the next six weeks of cage rest recovery so that her bones heal without compromise. During this time, Brixton will master crate training and self entertainment through busy bones and kong toys.

Joe
ADOPTED!!

This pathetic but adorable face is living proof that miracles do happen. Little Joe is currently recovering from a life threatening bout of an immune system crisis which made his fever so high (over 105 degrees) and his joints so painful that he was unable to stand or even sit up for several days. After four long days in the hospital on iv fluids, powerful antibiotics, and high doses of steroids, we are cautiously optimistic that six to eight weeks of medications will allow Joe the opportunity for a 'normal' life, although only time will tell. In the meantime, Joe enjoys playing with other pups, socializing with everyone who will show him a bit of attention, and riding around with his foster mom so he can get his special medications on time.

Lexi
ADOPTED!!

Little Lexi has one big personality ... she is one awesome package! This little gal is not your 'typical ankle-biter' ... in fact, Lexi has yet to meet anyone she didn't like. Although perfect size for a lap or even a purse, Lexi enjoys and is capable of using her feet to get around, hence why it was imperative that Friends of the Shelter support her full recovery by having her broken leg fixed so she can use all four of her feet for many years to come.
Lexi is CT and HB. Vet reference required. Lexi is in foster care recovering. She will be available for adoption in several weeks.

Roger
Adopted!!!
Roger is another case of an unexplained and life threatening high fever (>105, normal in a dog is 99.5-101.5) and swollen, painful joints, so bad that he was unable to stand on his own for days. We are suspicious that he, like Joe and Milo, has suffered an unusual reaction to vaccination known as an immune mediated polyarthritis. Roger, however, was lucky enough to find a chance at a forever happy ending thanks to Friends of the Shelter and after several grueling days of hospitalization on IV fluids, antibiotics, steroids, and pain medication, he is in the process of winning over a Boxer lover despite his medical challenges. Although we weren't sure if he was going to make it at first, Roger is now looking healthier by the day and is well on his way to becoming a model citizen. He is now crate trained, housebroken, and teaching his three human siblings how to best get away with being ornery thanks to his pathetic eyes and his always waggin' tail nub.

Poppy
Adopted!!

She may have been unadoptable to the eyes of some, but she was a keeper for sure in our eyes ... there was never a doubt that she was to be one of the lucky ones! She never heard our words of sympathy and encouragement but she felt them and continues to do so, with our gentle touch and our hand signals that keep her safe and teach her how to survive in a soundless world. Injured for weeks to months before she was found wandering around on three legs, little Poppy has had a tough time navigating in the world, especially without the help of a human. But her luck changed the day she was picked up by the dog wardens and brought to our shelter. And with every day of healing that she has endured and triumphed with us, she shows us her appreciation with her wagging tail, her soft licks, and her grateful eyes. Truly, there are few truly gentle souls in the world ... Poppy is one of them.

Warren
ADOPTED!!

Warren, aka 'Junior' is a happy-go-lucky, affectionate guy who is looking for an address to call his own. He came to the shelter as an unclaimed stray, eager to meet everyone who came to see him at his cage door. Unfortunately, Junior had a little 'accident' shortly after arriving at the shelter, falling out of his cage and landing on his right knee and splintering his bone ... but, thanks to the generosity of FOTS donors and our off-site infirmary care program, Junior had the opportunity to heal and is now ready to enjoy the snow. Junior has a super sweet and gentle personality. CT and working on HB. Vet reference required.

Little Lady's last home lasted only two weeks before she found herself broken and left at the dog shelter, at the mercy of those special people who believe in second chances, the generous donors of Friends of the Shelter. Xrays revealed a badly broken rear foot but with some time, manipulation, and good pain medications, the broken bones were able to be realigned and a splint applied to stabilize the bones while they heal. Lady is very sweet and an incredible patient ... so easy to handle and appreciative of all the kindness she has been shown. Lady is crate trained, working on housebreaking, good on leash, and wonderful with all the two and four legged friends she meets. Vet reference required.

ADOPTED!!
Was she the target of frustration? the victim of an accident?
or just in the wrong place at the wrong time?
Whatever the beginning, Friends of the Shelter supporters are going to make sure she has a happy ending.
Little Di Di came to the dog shelter broken, hobbling around on three good legs with a fourth broken leg along for the ride. With a quick xray to confirm the fracture site, a splint was applied to Di Di leg to stabilize the bones and allow her puppy resilience to allow her to heal with time and cage rest. She'll be in foster care for a couple weeks to come while she heals, updates to come.

Tater
Adopted!!!

Tater is full of personality and he is waiting to share it with you! He came to us with an old pelvis fracture that had not appropriately healed, leaving him with regular discomfort in his hip. Thanks to the support of Friends of the Shelter, Tater was able to have the surgery he needed to leave him without chronic pain and able to move around on four good legs instead of just three. He is about half way through his recovery (as of 4/1) and doing very well. Tater is CT and HB. Tate would do best in an all adult household as he is still a little worried about getting hurt again, so prefers to be handled very gently and gets worried with activity, especially of little people.
