These services are provided free of charge to any group in the community including schools, civic organizations, nursing homes, and any type of business or organization. Pet Safety Education

Organizations, Elementary Schools and Youth Group Programs

In-Class Presentations: For this program, a representative from Animal Care & Control will teach children responsible pet care, pet safety and animal related laws and also includes materials, such as, coloring books, educational materials and a dog or puppy to visit with the children. This presentation is from 30 to 45 minutes.

Hug-A-Pup: The Hug-A-Pup program is taken to businesses in the community to raise money for charity, to introduce the shelter services to the community, and to encourage people to come to the shelter when they are ready to adopt. Of course, several puppies will be available for hugging during Hug-A-Pup.
Call 462-7282 to schedule an event.

Pet Therapy

In our Pet Therapy program, our volunteers take shelter puppies to visit nursing homes, hospices, and the physically impaired.  Many patients recall when they had a loyal and faithful companion that was with them for many years. Holding a pet will not only help reduce stress but it will also help lower blood pressure.

To schedule a presentation, or for more information, contact the
Franklin County Dog Shelter at (614) 462-7282.

May 14 - 20, 2006
is National Dog Bite
Prevention Week

Don't Invite a Bite!
  • Never approach a dog that you do not know.

  • If you meet a strange dog, do not run!
(Running just encourages the dog to chase you!)

  • Do not scream and avoid direct eye contact.

  • Try to remain motionless until the dog leaves, and then back away slowly until the dog is out of sight.

  • Report stray dogs running loose to the Franklin County Dept. of Animal Care & Control at 462-3400.
