Rally for our Recovery! Every year we rescue dozens of nice dogs like these with special medical or treatment needs. They all have treatable illnesses that can be fixed with a little more time, money and TLC. However these expenses are not funded with public monies, so Friends of the Shelter contributes thousands of dollars each month for their care.
All of these new dogs need sponsors to help pay for their care and treatment. You can help by sponsoring one of these dogs to give it the chance for health and happiness that every dog deserves. Please donate to Friends of the Shelter! Your donations to FOTS are tax-deductible.
Killian
In Foster Care
Killian is one of those dogs who's story and personality just tugs at your heart strings and makes you believe in the resilience of our canine companions. Killian came to the shelter last month with severe head trauma and a broken hip after being hit by a car.
For the first week in our care, Killian could not stand or eat without assistance, but with a lot of TLC, patience, foster care, and time, the effects of Killian's trauma subsided and he relearned the basics of getting up and down, walking, doing a few stairs, eating and drinking on his own, and even playing with other dogs. With the improvement in his day to day activities, Killian was then able to undergo the surgery he needed to have his hip fixed thanks to Friends of the Shelter and their financial support of second chances.
Killian remains in foster care as he continues to recover and enjoys just being a dog. He is CT and working on perfecting his HB skills. Killian loves the companionship of other animals and people, and cats are fun too. No kids under 6years. Fenced yard recommended. Vet reference required.

Mowgli
In Foster Care
Mowgli is a happy, bouncy, active guy who can't wait to run and play at the dog park this spring! Mowg has spent the last month recuperating from a knee injury that required surgery to correct it (surgery he was only able to get thanks to those people who selflessly donate to Friends of the Shelter to give dogs a second chance they would not otherwise have in a dog shelter), but he feels great now and is ready to leave his cage rest and foster home behind and trade them in for fun and a new family.
Mowg loves the company of other dogs, is quite annoying but gentle with cats, and is eager to please people in general although sometimes forgets to keep all four paws on the floor. He would greatly benefit from puppy classes and has great agility potential as well. Crate trained and working on HB. Vet reference required.

Marley
In Foster Care
Marley is an absolute goofball. He often forgets just how big he is, especially when he decides he wants to hug you or plant a wet, sloppy kiss on your cheek! He is absolutely gorgeous and has an amazingly gentle temperament, although is in desperate need of some training so he can be a little more selective and less exhuberant with his affections! Marley came to the shelter with heartworm disease and has since been treated through our offsite program thanks to the generosity of Friends of the Shelter donors who step in when extra measures are needed to make a dog adoptable.
Marley has three months of saved energy waiting for his new family as he has been on cage rest (to finish end of February) since his diagnosis so don't expect much down time if you think Marley might be a good match for your family. He is wonderful with dogs, cats, and people, although would likely be too much for small children or a small house. Marley is crate trained and housebroken. Vet reference required. Marley is in foster care, email Katie.

Lex
In Foster Care
Lex is simply wonderful... He's laid back but social, a perfect couch snuggler, housebroken and doesn't need crated, and has the most endearing eyes. Lex came to the shelter as an unclaimed stray and almost didn't make it through our medical screening because he was found to be heartworm positive at intake. Lucky for Lex, Friends of the Shelter was quick to offer help and he was moved offsite to prepare for his heartworm treatment. Lex won't be available til March but rest assured he is in good hands til then and eagerly awaits someone falling in love with him just as much as we have. Vet reference required. Lex is in foster care, email Erin ...

Luna
In Foster Care
Luna is a happy, bouncy, eager to please girl who has had a rough time getting on the adoption page. First abandoned, then plagued with the parvovirus just before Christmas (she has fully recovered), and most recently, she had an unusual reaction to her microchip ... But she is a fighter and has no intention of giving up her chance for a happy ending now!
Luna is definitely true to her hound dog genetics with a keen sense of smell and direction, but not always a good ear for listening so she will need some extra training to reinforce her basic commands and responses ... Thankfully she is quite food motivated. Luna is crate trained and housebroken, loves to play with other dogs and harmlessly torments cats who don't escape to higher ground when she enters a room. Vet reference required. Luna is in foster care, email Erin ...

Skip
In Foster Care
Skip aka 'Jibby' is a happy, bouncy, active guy who loves the company of other dogs, cats & people! He is quite energetic and can keep up with the best of them, even with his small size, short legs, and 'bum' hip (he came to the shelter injured and thanks to Friends of the Shelter, has since had surgery to fix his injury so he can have a normal, functional, pain free life). He can be pretty vocal, so not ideal for apartment life, but he is crate trained and housebroken. He would be a great second dog and would do best in a home with a fenced yard. Skip plays hard and sleeps soundly, being quite the cuddlebug at any chance he gets. Vet reference required. Skip is in foster care, email Erin ...

Schroeder
In Foster Care
Schroeder is simply amazing ... BUT, it takes him a few weeks to adjust to new people, and show you his 'amazingness!' Schroeder came to the shelter after eluding animal control officers for several months ... day after day, concerned neighbors spotted him behind an apartment complex but he outran, outsmarted, or hid out of sight when officers searched for him. Schroeder's previous family was evicted, only they found new housing and he was left behind to roam free and fend for himself, and he quickly learned to fear people and to trust no one.
Finally, our wardens outsmarted Schroeder and rescued him. Schroeder did not do well in the shelter environment but was lucky to find a spot in the offsite infirmary care program supported by Friends of the Shelter while his intestinal parasites were treated. He is now in a foster home where he is doing well again. It took time for him to settle in, but now that he feels secure, he is most definitely your typical happy go lucky, playful, and social lab BUT, take him out of his comfort zone and unfortunately, Schroeder reverts back to a a 'shut down state' until he relaxes, explores, and gains his confidence back.
Schroeder loves the companionship of other dogs and cats, and he is hopelessly devoted to his people but is also easily spooked and when spooked, he will flee, so will forever be considered a'flight' risk. Schroeder is looking for a very special home ... one with experience with 'special needs' dogs, one with no children under 12 years of age, and one with a secure, privacy height fenced yard.
