2009 Statistics
Thank you for supporting homeless animals. For every dog or puppy adopted from the shelter, another life is saved.
- In 2009 the shelter provided a safe haven for 12,764 dogs and puppies.
- 2,828 dogs were returned to their owners.
- A total 4,113 dogs and puppies were adopted, rescued or rehomed.
- 2,941 of the dogs who entered our doors in 2009 were pit bull breeds.
- 54.4% of the dogs were redeemed, adopted, rescued or transferred to another shelter.
- 35.9% were euthanized due to poor health, advanced age or unsafe temperament. 9.4 % were euthanized at the owner's request.
- 44% of the total dogs euthanized were pit bulls.
- Many of the rescued or adopted dogs were special needs dogs with treatable, rehabilitatable or other managable problems. With additional medical care or treatment, they were eventually adopted. Click here to meet some special needs dogs we are currently helping.
- The shelter performed more than 3,600 spay or neuter surgeries, including all unaltered dogs prior to adoption, as well as hundreds of additional low cost surgeries for the community.
- Each year our dog wardens visit thousands of school children and adults teaching them how to be safe around dogs.
